1. Focal Stellia Review – Best Closed-Back Headphones Under 3000

In this Focal Stellia Review, we’re taking a look at the best closed-back headphones under $3000 from a well-known French speaker brand that has been making a significant impact on the head audio world.

The focal headphone has built a reputation of offering ultra-quality headphones – and while they are not always the most affordable, they normally boast a premium sound quality and design.

Like the Focal Utopia, the Focal Stellia headset is aimed at offering the best of the beast and it provides a closed-back design. But are they worth the price? We have been testing the Focal Stellia for a few weeks now to figure out.

Focal Stellia closed-back circum-aural headphones – Design

The primary thing you will notice about the headphones is their design and they are wonderful. They are perhaps even more elegantly designed than Focal Utopia, given their classy bronze color shades. Like other Focal headsets, the Focal Stellia offers a premium look.

The headphones are widely built from metal, with a fine feeling full-grain leather and solid feel throughout. As mentioned, the headset has a fine bronze color scheme, with a darker brown peppered around the headsets, including on the ear cups and below the headband.

At first glance, all about the headsets feels and looks very premium – and that extends below the hood too. The headphone features high-end Beryllium drivers aimed at delivering a clear, dynamic sound – which we will get into a litter later.

Apart from the headphones themselves, in the packaging, you will find a 1/8” to ¼” adapter, a detachable wire, and an elegantly designed and solid hard case. It is good to see – while you probably would not want to take these headsets on the road with you, if you do occur to take them out of the home they’d be relatively well-protected.

How Focal Stellia with the build quality and case?

The Focal Stellia headphones are outstandingly well-built. They’re made nearly exclusively of metal and have very few moving parts that make them feel durable and solid. The padding of the ear cup and hand band has full-grain leather covers that lend a very high-end feel to the device.

The cognac leather finish does stain simply, but this is to be expected of a pure leather product. The headphones come with a thick detachable braided wire that can replace if broken but do not come with additional ear pads.

They come with a big hard carrying case that helps protect headphones against scratches, physical damage, and water exposure. The interior is molded to strongly fit the headphones.

Focal Stellia Review – Comfort

The Focal Stellia headphones are extremely comfortable over-ear headphones. Their headband is well-padded and their ear cups are big and deep. They are very light and slightly bulky; they do not feel any fatiguing to wear over long periods. The leather cups feel pleasing on the skin and seal slightly better than the fabric coating of Focal ELEGIA, but they mightn’t seal as well as on everybody and can make gaps around the ears.

The Focal Stellia have a stable enough fit to remain on your head during critical and casual listening sessions but would not good for sports as expected. If you try to run or work out with these headsets, they’re likely to fall off. They are fine otherwise, though, so you do not have an issue with them wiggling around very much unless you are making exaggerated movements.

How the sound performance of these best closed-back headphones under 3000?

Focal Stellia sounds outstanding. While the Utopia is the visceral and perfect, and more leave headed to big bro, the Focal Utopia plays the part of the more laid back and wilder little brother. The tonality of the Stellia’s tuning is much less aggressive with naturally warm leaning and impactful and hard-hitting low end!

Not perfectly bass cannons, but they can hit extremely hard when called upon, and this is in no doubt down to the volume of air the big driver can move and a closed-back ear cups further enhancing the lows. It is a fast and responsive low and able of dynamic shifts in speed and weight without any feeling overworked. It’s never sloppy even when tasked with producing sub-bass blends and mid, and at a similar moment, it never leaks into the upper frequencies.

Bass

The Focal Stellia has great bass. LFE is at 10Hz and low bass within about one dB of our neutral target that means these headphones have deep and extended bass with a suitable amount of thump and rumble. This makes them ideal for bass-heavy music. There is a 3 dB bump that starts in mid-bass and continues into top bass, though, which can make these headsets sound a slight BOOMY and muddy.

Though, it’s worth noting that their bass delivery varies impressively across users, and is sensitive to the quality fit and seal and whether you wear glasses. This represents the usual bass response, and your experience might vary.

Mid

The mid-range is very smooth and just warm of neutral, lending itself to a wonderfully engaging listening experience. These are headsets able of taking to task music in critical listening sessions but very shine when you want to enjoy your track to the full. The lack of distortion and simple placement in the mid-instrument is a joy, and both strings and vocals are as nice as I’ve ever heard in closed-back headsets.

Treble

The treble performance what stood out for me in Utopia headphones, and it is here again now, we see the advantage of the design of the inner cup in full force. There’re simply no artifacts that I’d detect coming from resonance or bounce back from the ear cups. It is difficult to explain but something you notice when you spend some time in rightly tuned listening environments.

Sound Staging

The Focal Stellia headphones can put sound wherever the recording demands but the sound stage is a realistic measure and is not exaggeratedly wide. The staging is intimate and personal but could also produce width and it completely depends on the recording. I love the fact that they can project a nice height, width, and depth and could combine them rightly to place sound in 3-dimensional space within an inch of each other.

Focal Stellia – The Connectivity

They use common 3.5mm plugs but with a small twist in the design. The plug below of the ear cup is recessed and there’s a ride around the inside/outside of both 3.5 mm plug and socket that when you insert the plug, gently locks it into place.

I’d immediately tell this system takes a lot of stress off the jack itself and I love the concept for the sake of durability. Also being a general size I was able to use my already purchased wires long as they were terminated in 3.5mm plugs with plus tips. But I doubt, you’ll need a fine quality wire than what Focal includes in the box.

Focal Stellia closed-back headphones review – Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Open soundstage
  • Stunning, precise sound
  • Opulent design
  • Comfortable

Cons

  • Extremely expensive

Focal Stellia Review – Final words

The conclusion of my Focal Stellia review – The headphones have fairly balanced sound and overall nice audio reproduction. They’ve rich and punchy bass, even flat mid, and nice treble. Though their bass response is a little sensitive to fit and whether your wear glasses, the mid-range is a little overemphasized can make vocals and leads sound a little forward and their treble is somewhat veiled. Overall, they sound versatile to accommodate most genres of music and are very comfortable to wear for long sessions.

This is the best company to choose if you are looking for planar magnetic headphones.

Hifiman is a renowned brand when it comes to headphones and so I am reviewing the HE-1000 V2 of this brand which is one of the best open-back headphones.

The Design and Build Quality

Quality, features, and comfort: The headphone has a classic look but with a modern twist using the earcup shape and drivers. It is a sturdy and solid structure. The HifiMAN HE1000 V2 is made up of stainless steel, a metal frame and a combination of wood looks luxurious and perfectly looks and feels. The HE1000 V2 is one of the best planar magnetic full-size open-back headphones for under $3000, and for some occasions, the company has big a campaign to reduce its price down to $2000. That’s what you need to check the price from the dealer yourself.

The HE-1000 V2 model is newly upgraded from the HE-1000 model. The headband is developed and designed to accommodate a wider range of head sizes. This high-end open-back headphone is an ergonomic and comfortable headband design for most people as well as greater reliability and durability. The earpad is soft material and is comfy as well as not fatigue around the ears even during wearing for long listening music sessions. The earcups are huge and tall too which makes it a lot more comfortable for listening to songs for long hours. The weight is evenly distributed amongst the folding head strap and earcups. These full-size over-ear headphones do have not much weight, just around 14.8 ounces or 420 grams.

The HifiMAN HE-1000 V2 is wired over-ear headphones, not wireless and there is no Bluetooth. They provide high-grade cable and are tangle-resistant as well as included 3.5mm, 6.3mm, and balanced XLR terminations.

HiFiMAN HE1000 V2 Review – The Sound Quality

You can expect perfect sound from high-end headphones and the HifiMAN HE1000 V2 still doesn’t make you disappoint. Every sound ranges are well-balanced. The sound is impeccable from sub-bass through treble. The bass is tight and so strong. The mids and vocals are well-positioned and give amazing detail. The trebles are smooth and roll off when near the very top, which allows eliminates a lot of the potential of harsh treble sound.

The overall sound performance is more about pleasing than being a reference sound. The HifiMAN HE1000 V2 Planar Magnetic headphones produce more warmth and liveliness to the vocals than the HifiMAN Arya can do. It’s also better in terms of detail and soundstage when compared to other high-end planar magnetic over-ear headphones like HiFiMAN Arya.

HifiMAN HE1000 V2 Review – Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Having a uniquely mellow and soft design and presentation.
  • It reduces outside noise while listening to music and makes listening to music completely comfortable that you can feel
  • The depth and staging of music.

Cons

  • fine details are missing from this headphone.
  • It does not scale much with its source gear and its lack of air which makes it slightly tizzy treble.
  • It is a bit overpriced.

This is a premium headphone, which is hard to hate but it gives a little artificial sound in the treble.  It is an all-rounder and is a truly musical headphone.

These headphones provide a multitude of benefits like open-back headphones by giving a sense of space. Also, it isolates the sound for you. This is possible by use of a Japanese papermaking technology which allows creating an acoustic filter that can reduce resonance and deadens the sound.
