1. Focal Stellia Review – Best High-End Closed-Back Headphones

The Focal Stellia is one of the excellent audiophile headphones that I admit didn’t buy. But I had tried them out for a couple of hours with my friend and a time at the audio equipment shop near my home. After I try the Stellia, I would like to say, oh my god! This is one of the best audiophile headphones, really. I will have to write the Focal Stellia review and would recommend them for audiophiles if the price is not an issue.

Focal Stellia Review – The Sound Quality

Focal Stellia Review - Sound Quality

Have you ever been that when wearing audiophile headphones and feeling like slipping into another world? When I wear the Focal Stellia and listen to music, I really feel that.

When you wear the Focal Stellia and play music like Scorpions – Wind of Change and Hotel California of Eagles, you will be plunged into the world of music and impressed with all the notes and instruments. Even more impressively, you will hear every note even of low, and very high frequency.

The Focal Stellia is designed for drivers and earcups internal chips perfectly work together to deliver excellent detailed and clear sound and great neutral tonal balance. I really admire these closed-back headphones of Focal. However; I can’t own them, nearly 3000 dollars headphones and these are my end game.

Thanks to the closed-back design, this makes the Focal Stellia is more than other audiophile headphones. The exclusive electrodynamic speaker drivers work very well even playing a song really complicates melodies and tracks.

How about the Focal Stellia’s comfortability?

Focal Stellia - best closed-back headphones under 3000

Very soft and comfortable when it stays on my head. These premium closed-back headphones are also great with comfortable earcups and soft-padded headbands, these make the most comfortable while wearing these premium headphones for hours. And surely, I do not feel any fatigue around my ears. The headband also encapsulates lambskin leather and I’m not surprised with their price. The most comfortable and best sounding is the cause of the Focal Stellia is one of the most expensive headphones out there.

Still not ending, these circum-aural headphones also come with a luxurious carrying case for storage and protecting your most treasured headphones. It’s made easy to take away, even though these headphones are not suitable for traveling.

These headphones are not wireless, one thing that you should know. This is maybe one of the downsides, besides, their size is rather giant. These are why is not ideal for commute.

However, If you need the most excellent sound quality, wireless is not an option. You should be looking for headphones with quality wired, the Focal Stellia is one of the best choices if pricey is not the issue.

  • Exception build quality
  • Most comfortable headphones for extended periods
  • The carry case is classy and strong

Cons

  • It is one of the most expensive headphones

2. Sennheiser HD 820 Review – Glass Reflector Audiophile Headphones

The Sennheiser HD 800 is highly acceptable in sound quality. The HD800 and HD800 S are open-back headphones that have some leaking music out to the outside and let some noise in. Not good in terms of noise isolation, but the Sennheiser HD820’s closed-back design

can reduce reflections and resonances which means reducing the distortion of the sound.

Although the Sennheiser’s HD820 are high-end closed-back headphones, they have a bit of leaking sound and also not too much resonance because they are designed with breathable earcups and can cover whole ears.

Premium Design but quite a bulky

Sennheiser HD 820 review

The Sennheiser HD820 is a full-size and closed-back design, which means it can block outside noise very well. The design is completely back color and gorgeous, but the highlights are a glassing ear cup to review the driver inside. The glass design is not just for beauty but is designed to help spread resonance. It’s a cool, elegant, and unique design. The earpads inside are microfiber fabric material that enhances comfort while wearing and good ventilation.

The overall design is similar to the Sennheiser HD800 S. I think the HD820 looks a lot like a refined model of the HD800 S. While the Sennheiser HD800S is an open-back design, the Sennheiser HD820 is a closed-back headphone. The Sennheiser proudly proclaimed that they would create headphones that improved on the sound of the most sounding headphones like the HD800 S in a closed-back design. That is the Sennheiser HD820, which is one of the best closed-back headphones in the high-end class.

However; due to closed-back headphones and not being as breathable as the HD800 S, it is a little warmer than the HD800 S. In my private opinion should take some breaks, especially long sessions wearing them.

With the bulky and not foldable, the Sennheiser HD 820 is not ideal for traveling or taking with you. Except you have a lot of available space in your luggage which should be big luggage. You may use the box that comes with their package as the case for containing the headphones.

Sennheiser HD820 Review – Built quality

The Sennheiser HD 820 has a great built quality that gives a premium feel. It might not be the most sturdy and rugged headphones, but; it is not too fragile. I like the design of the earcups that mix plastic and glass. With the clear gorilla glass of the back earcups, you can see the inside of the driver. It’s a nice design and stylish and different. They look great and have a high-end look and feel.

The earpads are more luxurious than the old models. The headphones do not feel too heavy and have no trouble even wearing them for hours.

However; with the over-ear and closed-back design, it’s so bulky, and not great for any sports or not perfect for wearing while moving body activity. Another thing is that with the high-end specification, so you need a suitable powerful amp to drive great sound output.

Sennheiser HD820 Review – Best Closed-Back Headphones Performance

The HD820 does the noise isolation quite well but is not as good as other premium closed-back like Focal Stellia. Although, it is closed-back headphones but also has a little of your music out at the high volume level. If you listen to music at a loud volume, people around you may hear some sound leak.

HD820 Review – Sound Quality

best audiophile under 2500

When it comes to the sound quality, the glass is not just aesthetics – the curved design will help the resonance sound that emanates is spread throughout. These reduced the resonances and thinned. This design also provides this closed-back headphone from Sennheiser that can achieve a wider soundstage and more spacious soundstage than most closed-back headphones.

The Sennheiser HD 820 provides very deep bass including upper and lower bass is a complete detail. The vocal is natural and harmonious with the instrument. The vocal is not floating in the front but seamlessly with the instrument’s sound naturally.

So all in all if your target is the most open-sounding closed headphones without using any software to help, the HD820 is a product successful in the target. The sounds are huge for closed-back headphones cans and the soundstage did not lose most of the open-back headphones.

Unfortunately, have something that I don’t have in the Sennheiser HD820. For example, it doesn’t have active noise canceling, no built-in microphone, no Bluetooth, no wireless (just wired).

3. Sennheiser HD 660 S Review Best Audiophile Headphones Under 500

best audiophile headphones

The Sennheiser HD 660 S is the best audiophile headphone under 500. They have a fine audio reproduction and are comfy enough for long listening sessions. Though, they’re quite a little tighter than other models, like the Sennheiser HD 650.

They would not be great for any other use as their open shape does not block any sound and leaks a lot, so they are finest used in a quiet listening room where you can actually advantage of their sound performance.

Design and comfort

Sennheiser HD 660 S - Audiophile open back headphones

As I mentioned before, comfort is one factor in choosing the best audiophile headphones, and should be well-built. In order that you can use it for a long period of time to enjoy listening to music, the Sennheiser HD 660S is one of the most comfortable headphones.

The Sennheiser HD 660 S are amazingly designed open-back headphones. Their cups are huge and comfortable, but they’re relatively a little tighter than the other models, which some might not like during long-time listening sessions.

These headphones are for critical listening, offer no controls, and are not foldable for you to take them around. On the upside, they’re well-built, but the headland frame is a little thin and looks fragile. They have a ¼” connector by default but come with a 1/8” adapter as well so that you can utilize them with many sources like your cell phone.

The Sennheiser HD 660S is very comfortable, but they feel tight on the head due to their top clamping force. They are tighter than the same old model, but on the upside, the microfiber-like fabric utilized on the cup padding is really soft and feels fine on the skin.

The cups are extremely large and will be perfect for most ear sizes without any issues. The headband design is similar to that of the previous model, which is more comfortable than the Sennheiser HD 660 and distributes the headset weight efficiently.

Sound Performance – Ultra Classic Headphones

The Sennheiser HD 660 is a fine-sounding open-back over-ear audiophile headphone and has the same sound profile as the 650. Their bass is outstanding, consistent, and super punchy, the mid-ranges are finely balanced and clear, and their treble is outclassed.

4. Sennheiser HD 800 S Review – Best Open-Back Audiophile Headphones

When talking about audiophile headphones, Sennheiser is one of the headphones brands that people tend to think of, the same as Focal, Beyerdynamic, and HifiMAN. The Sennheiser HD 800 S headphones are top-of-the-line audiophile headsets. It’s very comfortable for long listening sessions. Due to it is open-back design makes the HD800 S deliver a natural, lifelike, and spacious soundstage. Many audiophiles say the Sennheiser HD 800 S is the best headphones on the market for consumers. Is it really? You should try to read a brief of the Sennheiser HD 800 S review before making decisions.

Premium Build Quality and Luxurious Design

Sennheiser HD800 S review

The headphone’s overall design is not different from its predecessor like HD 800. Of course with very expensive its price, the Sennheiser HD800 S would be made of premium material. The company said the material for the Sennheiser HD 800 S is the same grade as for airplanes and space shuttles, lol, I don’t know is true. Because I didn’t see the material like that before. But surely, if you buy the Sennheiser HD 800 S and receive it, you will feel the high-end materials and look outstanding when it is in your hand.

The earcups are padded with luxuriously soft material and rest around the ear for long-term comfort while listening to music. The transducer is a dynamic type and very large. The frame is made of both high-grade plastic and metal. The design and selection of materials are not only expensive but to isolate the transducers to be free. This design will reduce rumble or resonance problems very well and increase the sound quality to be better. The resonance is one of the parts that makes us miss some sound details. Sennheiser calls this design “Absorber Technology”. The headband also has a damping feature to reduce vibration.

Sennheiser HD800S Review – Comfortable

These over-ears are very soft and large, also perfectly covered around the ears. The plush suede-like padding on the earcups allows the HD800 S to be very comfortable. They aren’t too tight although the headphones a quite weight. You can wear the HD800 S for long periods without significant fatigue symptoms.

The Sennheiser HD800 S is open-back and has spacious earcups making it quite breathability. They will not make your ear too warm during long listening sessions.

These over-ear cans are big audiophile headhones and can’t be collapsible into a more compact shape. So they are not ideal for taking on the go. If you want to take them for traveling, these also take up a lot of space in your bag. Aslo you have to be careful other objects press or hit the headphones, even if the company gives a protective case in the package.

Sound Quality of the Sennheiser HD800S – Best Open-Back Audiophile Headphones

Sennheiser HD800 S - Best Open-Back headphones under $2000

Just start pressing the play button right away, and the sound that is delivered very astonishing, and highly natural. Airy sound and can hear every detailed sound. I just understand why the Sennheiser HD 800 S is the best open-back audiophile headphones. The sound is very detailed and extremely precise.

Soundstage

The soundstage is the main point of the HD800 S, I have to say that it’s great. There is airiness as mentioned before. They are spacious soundstage and have plenty of space to layer every instrument. This makes the position distribution of each instrument very accurate and excellent instrument sound separation.

Another good thing is the sound dimension. The sound dimension is very surrounds the listener very much. The Sennheiser HD800S produces wonderful sound dimensions. It can display the dimensions of the stage completely. Whether the depth of the stage or musical instrument is near or far, you can touch it. The bass and treble are clearly separated. The bass will stand on the below and the treble will float on top a bit.

I tested this can with Tommy Emmuauel’s album just the sound of a single acoustic guitar, it delivers a great dimension. Like we are sitting in the recording studio. You can also hear the level of micro details of playing the guitar. Whether it’s the sound of fingers hitting the fingerboard or the vibration of the guitar string, etc. The better the recording album, the better the sound quality you get.

Lows, Mids, and Highs

The frequency response is excellent across all ranges, 4Hz to 51,000Hz (-10dB), which is very wide. As far as trying to listen without paying attention to the specification, the balance in all frequency ranges is very good. Especially the mids and treble can go all the end way. The sound signature tends to be open and bright, not too fierce and provides a clean and natural sound. The mid sound is tuned very well. The vocals will not float out very prominently and their position is ideally in line with the supporting instruments too.

One thing you should know, most open-back headphones will not provide strong bass. The Sennheiser HD800 S headphones are still not except. However; although the bass is not prominent or thick. But the detailing is infinitely good. If you are an old bass player, you can listen to it and imagine the fingering of the bass being played on which, it is playing on the 4th or 5th string. The dynamic performance of the bass is also very good.

One thing to keep in mind, the Sennheiser HD800S requires a fairly high-power amp. Because, according to the specs, the HD800 S comes with a high impedance of 300 ohms at all. Besides, choosing a tube amp or transistor amp can also have a different effect on the sound quality as well. So you need to use an amp that has enough power. The Sennheiser recommends using HD800 S headphones with the Sennheiser HDV 820 headphones amplifier. Of course, he had to introduce his own brand, lol.
