Edifier H840 Headphones – Review & Buying guide

There’s been increasing demand for high-quality audio devices lately as more and more people want a good sound experience. Edifier is a well-known Chinese manufacturer that produced some decent audio products that are also available in the US now as the brand is rising through the ranks in the US market. Edifier H840 is one of the products I get to test from this brand and I`m really excited to see how they work with my iPad Pro.

Design and Features

It’s mostly a plastic build with an adjustable metal core headband (provides better durability than a plastic band) that weighs about 200 grams which is good because I didn`t feel weighted-down by their construction.

The same applies to the non-removable wire, which is two meters long. Actually, this works pretty well for a fixed use at the office, but it might be a bit long for listening to music on the go unless you don`t mind spending few seconds to fold the cable, which happens to be very flexible.

The headphones seem made to be utilized for travel as they come in handy with the compact design,  but I found a small issue for individuals that are not so much into music. The headphones don’t feature a travel case, which would seem right if you want to carefully place the audio cord.

The earcups rotate, but they don’t actually flip up or in. Plus the H840s haven’t any accessories, such as an aircraft adapter. Although we don’t expect a complete group of features and add-ons for this price, it would be nice to have some.

Edifier H840 – Soft and Comfort

What most of the lower-priced headphones skimp on is the comfort, but I was amazed by the fit of the H840s. The leather earpads are smooth and fit well surrounding the ears, providing the promised over-ear design.

As I mentioned, the Edifier H840 is very soft and comfortable to hold and to wear for long use, however, the leather may have trouble absorbing in hotter environments.

Audio Quality

Edifier H840 shows off their noise isolation capabilities, even though it’s important to notice this is not noise cancellation. The previous is a passive technique of blocking out sounds through the design of the headset, whilst the last one is a feature of more high-priced headphones that actively cancel out surrounding sounds. However, Edifier H840 does pretty well in the audio section

For EDM or different genres, these headphones do a pretty good job. But with different genres, there is a lack of separation among the instruments. However, the flat-response speakers make this an engaging device because of its versatility in performing a broader range of music without sound propagation becoming compromised because of either extreme bass.

The headphones connect via a 3.5mm jack connector, and the cable has a length of 2m. The headphones are made of premium materials and have a modern design that fits in any context.

How Do You Test a New Pair of Headphones?

A new set of headphones is an enjoyable thing, especially if they’re properly evaluated and you know they’ll sound excellent because the only ears that matter are yours. How do you test a new pair of headphones to be assured they sound just right? What do you listen to first?

1. Check Noise Cancellation

Noise cancelling feature uses the microphone of the headphones to intercept incoming sound, then this fancy feature generates inverse sound waves that go back into the headphones. The main scope of these inverse waves is to cancel out the ambient noise.

Place yourself in a quiet room with nothing playing through the headphones and listen for any noise on the line.

Then, either move to somewhere with ambient sound or use an external source to create it. See how much of it gets canceled. Noise cancelation takes an active approach to block external noise.

2. Check Noise Isolation

Noise isolation doesn`t require any active use of electronics to block out the ambient sound. Think of it as soundproof for your ears. For headsets, this feature comes with a soft and thick material that fits comfortably over your ears blocking the exterior sounds significantly.

Noise isolation`s quality depends on the ergonomic design and the optimum materials used to manufacture the earpad. This feature is also described as Over-Ear Design and you can test it in a quiet place for example in the office with your colleagues

3. Check Sound Quality

For the quality of sound, I have a playlist with various music genres that I fire up. From electronics to jazz then I mix it up with hip-hop, acoustic, and even 80s synthpop can help me categorize a good set of cans. Moving through genres as they come to mind to make sure the bass is not overpowered or set too high.
